Runnebohm Construction Company recently received an Award of Excellence from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Indiana (ABC) on the construction of the Knauf Insulation Corporate Office facility at the annual ABC Construction Awards Ceremony in Indianapolis
After a massive fire destroyed the research and development facility on the Corporate Campus of Knauf Insulation, company officials immediately indicated that they needed to emphasize energy efficiency as the primary goal when designing the new facility, and to make extensive use of recycled and “rapidly-renewable“ materials.
As a result, a new two-story, 24,860 square foot corporate office facility was design by Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf Architects. The new facility will accommodate 44 new offices, with future growth built in for up to a total of 50 offices. The space also includes a 126 seat public classroom named “Knauf Academy
Guidelines for the expansion utilized the United States Green Building Council LEED-NC Gold requirement that uses 30 percent less energy and water than a similar building built in a conventional way. The facility uses recycled water for irrigation, native plants for landscaping, daylight harvesting, a white membrane roof for heat island effect, and many other innovative techniques to reduce its carbon footprint.
To help to reduce the need for electricity to light and cool the space, the project incorporated a shaded parking lot, and sun-shaded windows to the south. Studies have shown that “green building features,” such as plenty of natural light, superior indoor air quality, views of the outdoors and landscaping surroundings increase employee productivity and their overall job satisfaction, which is important in attracting and retaining the best workers.
Knauf Insulation officials are very proud of the huge reduction in energy consumption and the subsequent minimization of CO2 emissions that they have seen through the use of advanced technology used on this project.
